Two Months Later

I pace across the room, inexplicably nervous even though everything is perfect. The flowers are perfect, my dress is perfect, the cake is perfect.

Even the weather decided to cooperate for once, the sunlight streaming through my dressing room’s tall window.

“Stop it,” Aurora says.

She’s sitting along one wall, on a white couch, nursing her two-month-old daughter.

“You got your father to agree to this, and that was the hardest part,” she points out. “Everything now will be smooth sailing.”

I sigh, because I know she’s right. Even getting my dad to let me marry two men at once wasn’t nearly as difficult as I was afraid it would be — after my near-death scare, I think he’d have said yes to nearly anything I asked.

“But everyone’s going to disapprove,” I say, stomach roiling. I’m nauseous again, but I ignore the sensation.

Aurora’s looking down, stroking the baby’s cheek as she nurses.

“They’re all going to be whispering, you know, whose child is it, what do they do at night, how can they possibly both be her husband...”

“And?” Aurora asks.

“And... I don’t want people to talk about me?”

Aurora smiles, shifting in her seat. Her daughter’s hand splays against her chest, and she takes it in her own.

“You know they’re already talking, right? And they’re saying all those things, and it’s every bit as gross and salacious as you’re afraid it is,” she says.

I flush bright red. I can’t imagine the lords and ladies of the kingdom talking about what Kieran, Beckett, and I do in bed.

“And worse, from what you’ve told me, they’re right,” she teases. “You saucy little minx, you.”

“I—”

She waves one hand in the air, laughing.

“You know I’m all for it,” she says. “Get it, girl. But they’re already talking, so you may as well marry the loves of your life, sweetheart.”

Her daughter detaches from her breast, waves her arms, starts looking around.

“Done?” Aurora asks softly, reattaching her nursing bra and pulling her dress back up.

I sigh.

“I know you’re right,” I say, my hand unconsciously going to my own belly. “I’m just nervous is all.”

“Everyone gets nervous,” Aurora assures me. “I was nervous, Ella says she was nervous. It’s a huge day. Don’t let it get to you.”

There’s a knock on the door, and I quickly double-check that Aurora’s decent before shouting, “Come in!”

It opens. Kieran and Beckett walk in. I frown.

“You’re not supposed to be here!” I say, crossing my arms. “I thought we agreed that you weren’t going to see me before the ceremony today—”

Quietly, Aurora stands, her daughter in her arms.

“We couldn’t help ourselves,” Beckett grins.

“It’s bad luck,” I insist.

“I bet we can make it up to you,” Kieran says, raising one eyebrow.

“I’ve gotta go, um, do some stuff that’s not in this room,” Aurora says, and breezes out the door, shutting it firmly behind herself.

“Don’t mess up my dress,” I say, acquiescing. “Or my hair, that took someone hours.”

Kieran grins, his face wolfish, as Beckett moves around behind me.

“We would never,” he whispers. “We just wanted to come remind you that we’ve got a surprise in store for you tonight.
